An Unusual Hiding Place
Hiding places are often associated with extremes: extreme conditions, extreme fear, or sometimes even extreme rest. We think of hiding places as temporary retreats, not permanent residences.
The Bible offers a different point of view. God offers us a hiding place with a name—Wisdom.
Wisdom, Our Hiding Place
My child, never drift off course from these two goals for your life: to walk in wisdom and to discover your purpose.
Don’t ever forget how they empower you.
For they strengthen you inside and out and inspire you to do what’s right; you will be energized and refreshed by the healing they bring.
They give you living hope to guide you, and not one of life’s tests will cause you to stumble.
You will sleep like a baby, safe and sound—your rest will be secure.
You will not be subject to terror, for it will not terrify you.
Nor will the disrespectful be able to push you aside, because God is your confidence in times of crisis, keeping your heart at rest in every situation. (Proverbs 3:1–13, The Passion Translation)
Wow! When I read this and see how wisdom encircles every part of our lives, I see it as a hiding place. Wisdom strengthens, inspires, energizes, and refreshes us by the healing it brings. It walks hand in hand with its partner, purpose. Together, wisdom and purpose give us a “living hope.”
The word “living” jumped out at me. Living hope has vitality; it keeps current, inspiring and guiding us through all of life’s seasons.
With wisdom and purpose surrounding us, the tests of life do not make us stumble. In this hiding place of wisdom, God gives us the safety and security to sleep like a baby.
Terror is banned from wisdom’s hiding place; its tentacles cannot reach us wisdom-dwellers. When the wicked are severely punished and crisis abounds, our hearts rest because our confidence is in God.
People hide in all kinds of places, behind their talents, careers, and even their clothing. Sometimes they hide in bars or behind their addictions. They can even hide in religion or relationships. The problem with these hiding places is they only offer temporary relief.
When we seek the wisdom of God and allow it to surround us, it becomes a divine hiding place! So what does your hiding place look like?
