To Have Fruit, You Must Have Roots
“Rotten to the core!” Have you ever heard that saying? God forbid anyone would say that about you or me. It’s an expression that means someone or something is rotten through and through, from the outside to the inside.
People can fool us, or we can fool people by having the “perfect outside” while the inside is empty or worse, ugly. Growing up, my mom would often tell me, “Kimberly, pretty is as pretty does.” She was always reminding me to work on the inside more than the outside.
So how do we work on the inside? First, we allow the Spirit of God into our lives to reign supreme. His Holy Spirit should take root in us, going deep and transforming our character and nature. Over time, it alters our thinking, attitudes, and actions.
The gift of the Holy Ghost bears fruit—the manifestation of the Spirit.
Listen to this powerful list from Galatians 5:22–23 in The Passion Translation Bible.
But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit. Never set the law above these qualities, for they are meant to be limitless.
Wow! What an amazing list of powerful traits we have access to through God’s Holy Spirit. Take note of the actions that follow these words: peace that subdues, faith that prevails! God intends for His fruit in your life to produce action! First, His fruit produces these godlike qualities deep within you. Then, when the roots are nourished with prayer and consecration, these qualities will grow and feed and nourish others, transforming your life into His likeness.
What seeds are you planting in your life? What kind of fruit are you growing?
