Mama, Make Your Mark

Before your baby ever takes a breath, you are already their whole world. You are their heartbeat, their warmth, their first sound, their first safe place. Long before anyone else gets the chance to love your child, you already do. That is not an accident. That is a calling.

Mama, you were chosen for this.

Something extraordinary happens in the quiet moments you may not even notice: the lullaby you hum while folding laundry, the way you whisper “I’ve got you” in the dark, and the small hand you hold crossing the street. These moments are not insignificant. They are the building blocks of a human life. And you are the architect.

From the very beginning, your voice is the one they know. Studies have shown that babies recognize their mother’s voice from inside the womb.  I recall that during the last weeks of pregnancy, our firstborn Julianna would move towards my voice whenever she heard it.  It always amazed me. From the moment they arrive, it is your voice that calms the storm. That is power. That is influence no one else on earth holds in quite the same way. No teacher, no coach, no mentor gets that kind of head start. Only you.

You are their first love, the face they search for in a crowded room, the arms they run to when the world feels too big. You are teaching them right now what love looks like—God’s love in a human form. How it shows up and stays. Every hug you give is writing a definition of love on their heart that they will carry for the rest of their lives.

You are their first friend, the one who sits on the floor and plays make believe, who laughs at their silly jokes before anyone else thinks they’re funny, who sees them fully and delights in them anyway. Friendship is a skill, and you are their very first teacher of it.

You are their first teacher, and your classroom is everywhere. It’s the grocery store where you count apples together. It’s the dinner table where you talk about hard days. It’s the car ride where they ask impossible questions and you answer honestly, or sometimes say, “I don’t know. Let’s find out together.” You are teaching them curiosity, resilience, kindness, and courage, often without even realizing it.

You are their first confidant, the one they whisper secrets to and test their truths on, the one whose reaction teaches them whether the world is safe enough to be honest in. When you lean in, listen without judgment, and respond with grace, you are building a child who believes their voice matters.

And here is what you must not forget: Your influence does not expire. It doesn’t end when they start school, when they hit the teenage years and act like they don’t need you (they do), or even when they grow up, move out, and start families of their own. The mark you make echoes forward into every relationship they will ever have, every risk they will take, and every time they decide whether they are worthy of love.

So on the days you feel invisible, the laundry is endless, the patience is thin, and you wonder if any of this matters—it matters. Every single bit of it.

You are not just raising a child; you are shaping a future. You are leaving a legacy written not in ink, but in the way your child laughs, loves, and chooses to show up in the world.

Make your mark, Mama. It lasts a lifetime—and then some.
