Saved through Praise
Life can put us in tight spots and often catch us by surprise. A health scare, loss of a job, trouble in relationships, seasons of transition, and other challenges can make us feel vulnerable, afraid, and sometimes frozen in the moment.
I take refuge in the action plan that David chose during these tough times. Whether he was a shepherd, a lion killer, a harpist, a refugee, a giant killer, a javelin jumper, or an anointed king, David’s plan was the same. Look at his insightful words of hope.
I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. (Psalm 18:1–3)
David kept first things first. He kept the first commandment to love the Lord with all his heart.
Second, David always knew the source of his strength. It never came from himself, but always from God. This strength gave David such confidence that regardless of the enemy’s form, strength, or size, David knew he was in covenant and would always have victory!
Third, David knew his greatest weapon was praise! After his identity was firmly established, David wielded praise as a reminder to himself and those around him that no matter if it was friend or foe, his God would bring him through every situation.
Notice how David described his God: my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my strength, my buckler, the horn of my salvation, and my high tower! Wow! That’s an impressive list!
Imagine your life in light of these attributes of God. Are you aware that God can be your fortress? Your rock? God wants to be your high tower that you can run to for safety, a place to clear your vision and give you a fresh perspective.
David did not put his trust in himself; he placed his trust in God! What would your life look like if you were to place all your trust in God?
Finally, whenever David got in a tight spot, he continually called on God and praised Him for who He was. As David praised His deliverer and his horn of salvation, God became that to David.
Do you need an advocate? Do you need a Savior? Do you need a fortress? Call out in faith and trust. You too can be saved by your praise!
